Angraecinea Gallery

Angraecinae is a subtribe in the family Orchidaceae. The subtribe consists of approximately 18 genera and about 360 species. Most of the genera are endemic to Africa, Madagascar and other Indian Ocean Islands. In the wild they are pollinated by moths. To ad this process, most have white flowers (easier to see by moon light) and are very fragrant, but only at night. The production of fragrance requires a lot of energy so the flowers only emit it when their pollinators are active. Most of these species are not widely grown in cultivation and it requires a fair amount of hunting to build a large collection. I mostly grow members of the genus Angraecum ( an-GRAY-cum)and Aerangis ( air-ANG-giss ). Most of the flowers pictured are species, as these are not heavily hybridized.
